The world
Where the game lives.
Lelo burti is an old Georgian folk game that belongs to nobody. It is still played in Shukhuti, in Guria: the upper half of the village against the lower, a leather ball of sixteen kilos stuffed with sawdust and soaked in wine, a field between two streams. Georgia’s rugby team is named after it.
Here the upper village wears green sashes, the lower carmine. The elder throws the ball in. The smith doubles his side’s push, the shepherd blocks a push against his, the drummer beats three double steps — and the sun sets over eight steps of field on each side.
